Thoroughly modern Magna Carta

SHARE

Surprising as it may seem, Magna Carta, made in 1215, continues to talk to us about topical issues of today, such as detention, treatment of aliens, rights of citizenship and eviction of foreigners. Magna Carta states:

41        All businessmen may enter or leave England unharmed and without fear, except in time of war when an enemy alien will be detained until the safety of English businessmen in enemy territory is known.

42        English citizens may freely leave and return to England.

51        All foreigner fighters will be removed from England once peace is restored.

This gives further proof to the aphorism “Everything old is new again”
